Privacy policy

Last updated 26 October 2026

Talkr is a speaking-practice app for iPhone. You talk about a topic and get a score and tips on how to improve. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Talkr app and this website, what we do with it, and the choices you have.

The short version:

  • Your voice recordings are never stored. They’re used only to make a transcript, then deleted.
  • Your transcripts, scores and feedback are saved to your account so you can look back at past sessions. Only you can see them in the app.
  • We don’t sell your data, we don’t show ads, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.
  • You can delete your account and everything in it at any time.

Who we are

Talkr is made by Kaiku Labs ([COMPANY LEGAL NAME], [REGISTERED ADDRESS]). We’re the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have any questions, email us at contact@kaikulabs.com.

What we collect

When you sign in

Talkr uses Sign in with Google (and, where available, Sign in with Apple). When you sign in, we receive and store:

  • your name and email address (if you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we receive Apple’s private relay address instead)
  • your profile picture link, if your Google account has one
  • your Google or Apple account identifier, and the sign-in tokens Google or Apple issue so we can verify it’s you

We never see or store your Google or Apple password.

When you practise

  • Your voice recording. When you finish speaking, the app sends the recording to our server over an encrypted connection. We convert it, send it to our speech-to-text provider to be transcribed, and delete it straight away. It’s held only in memory and in a temporary file for the few seconds this takes. We never store your recordings, and no one at Kaiku Labs can listen to them.
  • Your session results. We save the transcript of what you said, the topic, the language you spoke in, the date, how long you spoke, your score, your feedback and tips, and the measurements behind them (for example, filler words, pace, pauses, repetitions and vocabulary).

Settings and sign-in sessions

  • Your preferred language and whether you’ve finished the app’s introduction.
  • For each signed-in device: a session record with the IP address and device and app information (the user agent) it signed in from, and when the session expires. We use these to keep you signed in, protect your account and limit abuse.

Stored on your device

The app keeps your sign-in session in your iPhone’s secure storage (the Keychain) and a list of topics you’ve already practised, so you aren’t given the same ones again. The recording is kept on your phone only until it has been analysed, then deleted. Deleting the app removes the practised topics and any recording waiting to be analysed. Your sign-in session can stay in the Keychain until it expires or you sign in again.

What we don’t collect

The app doesn’t use advertising, analytics or crash-reporting tools, and doesn’t collect your location, contacts or photos. It only uses the microphone while you’re recording a session, after you’ve given permission.

This website

This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics or tracking. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses and the pages requested) for security and to keep the site running.

How we use your information

We use your information to:

  • provide Talkr: sign you in, give you topics, analyse your speaking and show you your results and history (necessary to perform our contract with you)
  • keep Talkr secure and working: prevent abuse, limit requests and fix problems (our legitimate interests)
  • improve Talkr’s feedback: we may review stored results, and where needed individual transcripts, to check and improve how accurately Talkr scores and coaches (our legitimate interests; you can object at any time, see below)
  • reply to you when you contact us (our legitimate interests)
  • meet legal obligations, where they apply (legal obligation)

We don’t use your data for advertising, we don’t sell it, and we don’t share it with data brokers. We don’t make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects based solely on automated processing; your score and tips are automated, but they’re only there to help you practise.

Who processes your data

We use a small number of service providers who process data on our behalf, only to provide Talkr:

Provider What they do Data involved
Railway (Railway Corporation) Hosts our server and database Everything we store
OpenRouter (OpenRouter, Inc.) Routes our requests to the AI models below Recordings and transcripts, while they’re processed
Microsoft, through OpenRouter (MAI-Transcribe) Turns your recording into a transcript Your recording and the language you spoke in
Jev, through OpenRouter Assesses the content of what you said Your transcript and the topic

Google and Apple process your data under their own privacy policies when you use their sign-in. Apple also handles App Store downloads and any purchases under its own terms.

We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or as part of a sale or reorganisation of our business, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your data.

International transfers

Our providers may process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where data protection law requires it (for example, for data from the UK or the European Economic Area), we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK’s equivalent.

How long we keep it

  • Recordings: not kept. They’re deleted as soon as the transcript is made.
  • Account details, transcripts and results: for as long as you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete them.
  • Sign-in sessions: they expire after 60 days without use. Deleting your account removes them.
  • Emails with us: for as long as we need them to help you, and no longer than two years after our last exchange.

Deleted data may remain in our hosting provider’s backups for a short time before it’s overwritten.

Deleting your account

To delete your account and all your data, email contact@kaikulabs.com from the email address you sign in with, and we’ll delete it within 30 days. We’ll confirm when it’s done.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you, and get a copy
  • correct it if it’s wrong
  • delete it
  • object to or restrict how we use it, including the improvement use described above
  • receive it in a portable format

To use any of these rights, email contact@kaikulabs.com. We’ll reply within one month. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your data, you can complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office), but we’d appreciate the chance to sort it out first.

Security

All data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Sign-in tokens on your phone are kept in the iPhone Keychain, and your results can only be fetched by your own signed-in account. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and to keep the amount we store to a minimum.

Children

Talkr isn’t intended for anyone under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect data from children under 16. If you think a child has given us their data, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we make significant changes, we’ll update the date at the top and, where appropriate, let you know in the app. The latest version is always on this page.
